ISU Congress changes skating's rules
The 52nd International Skating Union Congress voted to reduce the number of elements in Freeskating for Singles, Pairs, and Synchronised to encourage innovation. The Congress also agreed in principle that the compulsory and original dance segments would be replaced with a new segment from 2010-2011. More...
Gold and Bronze at Hollins
Seven New Zealand athletes took part in the 2008 Hollins Trophy in Sydney and brought back a gold and bronze medal. Christchurch skater Madeline Parker brought home the gold medal with a first place finish in Primary Ladies. Madeline scored 79.91 points while Jessie Park wound up in 7th place with 66.05 points in the 12-strong field. In Pre Primary Ladies, Sarah Macgibbon took the bronze medal and Alexandra Ley placed 9th with 76.60 and 68.42 points respectively in the 21-strong event. In Senior Ladies, Caitlin Haynes placed 4th with 62.70 points in a field of four. In Novice Ladies, Yuko Tanaka finished in 8th position with 68.28 points in the 15 strong event. New Zealand coaches have joined the NZISA after constitutional changes paved the way for coaches to take a more active role in the association. The NZISA will take over responsibility for accreditation and the coaches will have more input into rule and policy changes. Welcome coaches! More...
NZ Skaters Prepare for Hollins

The NZISA now has a record of IJS scores for all New Zealand competitors and international competitors from all Nations. A link to the Highest Scores Database can be found on the top right of the Competitions page and shows skaters in the order of their highest IJS score. All NZ skaters may find their own highest IJS scores by clicking on the link near the bottom of the myNZISA tab in the Members' Area. Juvenile 12 and over at 2008 Nationals

Solo Dance at 2008 Nationals

The International Skating Union World standings have been finalised for the year. Tristan Thode was ranked 79th in Men, Allie Rout 88th in Ladies, and Joel Watson 100th in Men. The top three ranked skaters in each division share US$90,000 in prize money. Daisuke Takahashi was ranked 1st in Men, Carolina Kostner in Ladies, Isabelle Delobel & Olivier Schoenfelder in Dance, and Aliona Savchenko & Robin Szolkowy took the top honour in Pairs. More...

On Saturday, Allie Rout became the first New Zealand trained ladies representative to ever qualify at Junior Worlds. Allie Rout placed 23 in the short programme with 40.70 points earning her one of the 24 places in the free skating. Four Continents Results
Tristan Thode finished 14th with a personal best score of 115.99 in a 21-strong field at the Four Continents Figure Skating Championships in Seoul, Korea. Joel Watson would up in 18th position with 109.03 points. In ladies, Morgan Figgins earned 26.92 points in the short programme, placing 27th, but failing to qualify to skate in the free skating in the unprecendented 33 skater field. More...

A Gold and Bronze Summer
New Zealand skaters at the 2008 Summer Trophy in Brisbane picked up two gold and a bronze medal at the event. Caitlin Haynes took home the gold in Senior with 69.66 points as the sole entrant. In Intermediate Ladies, Paige Brownsey scored 63.88 points with a 4th place in the short and a 7th place in the freeskate to finish 7th overall in an eight-strong field. Iyrin Quigley scored a record 92.94 points in Primary and took home the gold medal with 1st place finishes in both events in a field of six. Countdown to Four Continents
Morgan Figgins, Tristan Thode and Joel Watson are preparing for the ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships in Seoul, Korea beginning 11 February. Four Continents is the selection event for Worlds. Tristan and Joel will be competing against each other, while Morgan, as the only Ladies' competitor, will be competing for a minimum total technical element score to gain selection.
NZ Skaters prepare for Summer Trophy
Auckland-area skaters Alex Ley (Pre-Primary), Iyrin Quiqley (Primary), Paige Brownsey (Intermediate) and Caitlin Haynes (Senior) will be competing at the Summer Trophy in Brisbane, Australia from 21-25 January. The North Island Ice Skating Sub-Association with funding from the New Zealand Community Trust has provided additional ice time over the holidays to assist these skaters and others headed overseas to prepare. Two historical videos are how available on the website. The Mt. Harper video is a news story discussing skating on the Mt. Harper ice rink in the 30s and 40s. The second is historical footage of skating on the Tekapo rink from probably around the late 50s.
